Metro Vancouver weather: Forecast shows shift to sunshine, temps up to 20 C

Get your sunglasses ready.

The Metro Vancouver weather seven-day forecast hints at some increasingly warm temperatures and sunshine this week.

Starting Monday, April 14, V.I.A.'s Downtown Centre Weatherhood station shows a high of 15 C with a mix of sun and cloud and an overnight low of 8 C. Tuesday's forecast shows similar conditions, with a high of 14 C and a low of 9 (see slide two).

Temperatures are expected to increase starting midweek as a ridge of high pressure builds in the region, keeping conditions warmer and drier. In a previous interview, Environment Canada meteorologist Lisa Erven said the ridge would start developing over the weekend and into next week. Wednesday's forecast includes a mix of sun and cloud and temperatures up to 16 C in the downtown area. Thursday and Friday's temperatures are expected to reach highs of 17 C and 18 C, respectively.

Places further inland are expected to see warmer temperatures on Wednesday. For example, the New Westminster Weatherhood station shows a high of 18 C on Wednesday and highs of 19 C on Thursday and Friday. Clear skies are also expected on the final days of the week, providing ideal conditions for strolling under cherry blossom trees.

The Metro Vancouver weather forecast includes temperatures up to 20 C inland

Burnaby's forecast includes even warmer temperatures, with a high of 19 C on Wednesday and highs of 20 C on Thursday and Friday (see slide three). Surrey's East Newton neighbourhood is also expected to see the same temperatures.

North Vancouver's Lower Lonsdale area is expected to see cooler temperatures, with a high of 15 C on Wednesday and a high of 17 on Thursday and Friday.

Saturday's forecast includes cooling temperatures as the ridge of high pressure breaks down and clouds roll into the region. Downtown Vancouver is expected to see temperatures drop from a high of 18 C on Friday to 14 C on Saturday. By Sunday, a system is expected to bring cooler temperatures and light precipitation, with a single-digit high of 9 C and up to five mm of rainfall expected.

The long-term Metro Vancouver weather forecast includes above-average temperatures for the remainder of April and May. Environment Canada is also expecting June to show above-normal temperatures, although the rest of the summer is currently unknown.
