Kudos to some local folks who are being recognized for their exceptional volunteer achievements.
On behalf of Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, B.C. Lt.-Gov. Janet Austin presented the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers to 44 B.C. recipients at a Sept. 5 ceremony at Government House in Victoria. The medals recognize the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields.
This year’ recipients include:
New West resident Robert Park, who has spent decades volunteering with organizations such as the cadet movement, the Navy League of Canada, the Naval Officers’ Association of British Columbia, the Anglican Young People’s Association, the YMCA and Queens Avenue United Church. “He is passionate about history and has collected information on the local sea cadet unit to write book on its 100-year history,” said a press release.
New West resident Tony Spiess, who has spent more than 25 years helping members of the Canada Armed Forces overcome personal obstacles through the Veterans Transition Program. He’s also the co-founder of the B.C. Fire Fighter Resiliency Program, and raises money for the B.C. Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Christine McNulty, a Richmond resident who teaches at New Westminster Secondary School, was recognized for taking a leadership role with organizations such as B.C. School Sports, giving students from throughout B.C. an opportunity to participate in provincial championship. “Thousands of student athletes in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland have benefitted from Christine McNulty’s contributions to sport,” said a press release.
Chief Warrant Officer Mitchell Bain of Burnaby received an award for his volunteer efforts, which include being involved with the Sapperton Fish and Game Club for many years.
Any Canadian citizen who has made significant, sustained and unpaid contributions to their community in Canada or abroad, as well as non-Canadians whose contributions have brought benefit or honour to Canadians or to Canada, are eligible for the award. Nominations are accepted on an ongoing basis throughout the year.
