[UPDATE] New Westminster:
New democrats in New West are optimistic the NDP will win the riding – but aren’t making any predictions about provincial results.
A boisterous crowd of 50 people is currently gathered at New Westminster NDP candidate Judy Darcy’s election party where they are watching results on TV screens
“I think this one is too close to call,” said Coun. Bill Harper. “The undecided are going to decide it.”
Harper said he would be “shocked” if Darcy lost her seat in the B.C. legislature. While the Greens may make inroads in this election, he said, it will take time before the takes off in B.C.
“People don’t change their stripes overnight, the do gradually.”
New Westminster MP perter Julian predicts new democrats would do well in New Westminster and Burnaby.
Richmond-Queensborough:
This is the first election cycle for the new riding of Richmond-Queensborough, which sees the New Westminster piece of Lulu Island paired with the east end of Richmond. While in the past, East Richmond has typically gone Liberal, Queensborough residents have been more inclined to vote NDP like the rest of New Westminster, so it’s anyone’s guess who’ll take the new riding.
Both NDP candidate Aman Singh and Liberal candidate Jas Johal have been working hard to get voters to the polls. (Singh is the only candidate, however, to have a campaign office in Queensborough and Richmond.)
And with Green party candidate Michael Wolfe looking to capitalize on Jonina Campbell’s popularity in New Westminster, it’s really hard to say who will win this riding.
