The New Westminster Police is now accepting applications for its annual student policy academy, which runs every summer in July.
The two-week program is open to Grade 11 and 12 students from across the Lower Mainland interested in a career in policing. Students will get an up close look at what it takes to be a cop and will get to experience some of the training real police cadets go through.
Students will learn about physical conditioning, self-defence, firearm safety, investigative methods and advanced driving techniques. They’ll also get to take part in scenario-based simulations, hear from guest speakers, see the Air 1 police helicopter and take a ride on the Fraser River with the department’s marine unit.
Successful candidates will demonstrate professionalism, responsibility, accountability, integrity, service and endurance. There is a $50 fee to apply and all applications are due by April 1.

This year’s academy runs from July 1 to 12.
