Hundreds of people had their first-ever look at the efforts of the Vancouver Wooden Boat Society during RiverFest 2022.
As part of RiverFest, the non-profit society opened the doors to the Wooden Boat Centre in New Westminster on Saturday.
“Wow. Our first open house and rendezvous was a big success,” said a posting on the group’s Facebook page. “We had over 20 small boats on display, and hundreds of visitors toured the facility and looked at all the beautiful crafts.”
RiverFest 2022 included a variety of events, including online presentations, walking tours of the waterfront and a workboat parade.
The Vancouver Wooden Boat Society focuses on promoting, encouraging and facilitating interest in heritage wooden boats, and operating the Wooden Boat Centre
“If you have been lurking and wondering if this centre is for you, now is the time to jump on board and join us as we get back to working on some of our boats,” said the posting. “The shop has gone through quite a bit of upgrades these past few months. If you have not been there in a while, you will be amazed.”
The club says some of the benefits of membership include learning about boat-building alongside professional boat builders, learning woodworking skills and learning how to use woodworking equipment. It also provides programming for its members and the public.
According to the society’s website, the Vancouver Wooden Boat Society, in partnership with several community groups, organizations and members, operates the Wooden Boat Centre in New Westminster. It operates in a heritage building that’s owned by the City of New Westminster and sits in Sapperton Landing Park, a Metro Vancouver park.
