As one of the most beloved stories ever told, Sleeping Beauty has enchanted audiences since its first incarnation in the 14th century. This February, Ballet Jörgen will build upon the centuries-long legacy, bringing the fairytale to life for one night at the Massey Theatre in New Westminster.

Renowned for its dazzling choreography and commitment to classical artistry, Ballet Jörgen’s unique interpretation of  Sleeping Beauty offers a fresh yet faithful perspective on the tale of Princess Aurora, her fateful curse, and the transformative power of love. With exquisite costumes, a majestic score, and exceptional performances from its talented company, this production captures the timeless magic that has made Sleeping Beauty a cultural cornerstone for over 600 years.

A timeless tale comes to life

Whether you cherish the lyrical prose of the fairy tale’s earliest incarnation or adore Disney’s iconic 1959 adaptation, Ballet Jörgen’s Sleeping Beauty invites audiences of all generations to share an unforgettable experience together.  “The power of ballet is that it can communicate without using words and make us feel and understand through the simple beauty of movement,” says Jessica Schneider, executive and programming director at Massey Theatre. “This performance lets us share something that is happening here and now, never to be repeated the same way.”

Ballet Jörgen’s Sleeping Beauty draws on the traditional choreography by Marius Petipa to tell a captivating story of nature and love. The enchanting tale is set to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s original 1890 score, with a libretto based on Charles Perrault’s La Belle au bois dormant.

A stage made for magic

Boasting the largest proscenium arch stage outside of downtown Vancouver, the Massey Theatre is the perfect venue to host such a grand performance. “The Massey is a production theatre, which means it was built to showcase complete scenic designs and large casts of performers,” explains Schneider. “There is no better place to see this kind of performance.”

The theatre also offers ample free parking and convenient access to transit, local restaurants, and cafes—making it easy to create lasting memories during the holiday season and beyond.
