What’s better than rewatching your favourite movie at home?
Watching your favourite movie come to life!
From April 25 to May 11, Royal City Musical Theatre will present a live adaptation of Dolly Parton’s beloved film 9 to 5 at The Massey Theatre in New Westminster.
With original music and lyrics by Dolly Parton herself, the show follows three overworked and underappreciated office workers—sharp-witted Violet, timid Judy, and feisty Doralee—as they take control of their futures in ways they never imagined.

Originally starring Parton alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5: The Musical will feature a powerhouse cast of nearly 30 performers, bringing the story to life with dynamic choreography, a live orchestra, and standout performances from Irene Karas Loeper, Madeleine Suddaby, and Maia Beresford in the lead roles.
This Broadway-style production amplifies the story of friendship and empowerment, touching on themes that remain just as relevant today as when the film premiered in 1980.
“The struggle for true equity and acceptance is still ongoing,” says Chris Adams, Interim Artistic Director of Royal City Musical Theatre and co-director of Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5: The Musical. “Many of the themes of the movie remain, unfortunately, just as relevant today. It’s a great reminder of the importance of standing up for what’s right—delivered with humor, heart, and a bit of musical flair!”
And if flair is what you’re after, you’ve certainly come to the right place.
“Audiences can expect a big, Broadway-style musical—something Royal City Musical Theatre is known for,” explains Adams.
Presented by Royal City Musical Theatre (RCMT), this production continues the company’s tradition of delivering Broadway-caliber performances to the Lower Mainland. For over 35 years, RCMT has staged acclaimed productions, including classics like Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Singin' in the Rain, and Annie. The company provides a platform for both seasoned professionals and emerging performers, fostering growth and excellence in musical theatre.
Fans of the original 9 to 5 film can expect a faithful homage—but bigger, bolder and bursting with song! “Watching the movie, there are so many moments that feel like they should burst into song,” says Adams. “Now they do!”
