Century House is holding its popular thrift and craft sale on Sept. 14.

Shoppers will have a chance to hunt for treasures – and support invaluable services for seniors – at this weekend’s popular sale at Century House.

The Century House Association’s annual thrift and craft sale is on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Century House, 620 Eighth St. Handmade arts and crafts, baked goods, plants and secondhand treasures including tools, collectibles, jewelry, art, housewares and knickknacks will be among the items available at the sale.

Val MacDonald, a volunteer at Century House, said the association typically holds two sales a year (one in the spring/summer and another for Christmas). After being put on hold by Covid, the sales returned in 2023.

“The attendance was down last year as a result of Covid; people were still not ready to get out in public groups, large gatherings,” she said. “We are hoping this year we will get a fantastic sale because we need to catch up on what we didn’t make last year.”

Shoppers are advised to bring their own bags. While cash is preferred, credit card and debit cards will also be accepted (with a minimum of $10).

MacDonald said Century House appreciates the donations that have been coming in for Saturday’s sale, as well as the efforts of close to 100 volunteers who have been busy sorting and pricing items and will be working at Saturday’s sale.

“You name it, there are all kinds of jobs to do,” she said. “This takes us all week to get ready.”

Donations of secondhand items, including jewelry, kitchen items, books, puzzles and knickknacks (no clothing, holiday décor, furniture, linens, blankets, pillows or electric appliances), are being accepted until Friday. Donations should be clean and in good condition.

Donated goods can be dropped off at Century House this week during the following hours: Tuesday, Sept. 10 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.); Wednesday, Sept. 11 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.); Thursday, Sept. 12 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.); and Friday, Sept. 13 (10 a.m. to noon only).

MacDonald said money raised at the volunteer-driven sale goes directly into programs and services provided by Century House. That includes recreation activities like bridge, mahjong, whist, and quilting and crafting groups.

“Century House is critical to keep seniors from loneliness,” she said. “All the programs and services that we provide are making a difference in the lives of seniors.”

Save the date

The annual Christmas craft and bake sale returns to Century House on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“The baking is fantastic,” MacDonald said. “There are fabulous bakers at Century House.”
