There’s plenty of action happening in New Westminster on this Family Day long weekend. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for the Feb. 7 to 10 long weekend.
1. Support downtown businesses impacted by October’s devastating fire at the Fire in the Heart concert and fundraiser at the Columbia. The Rhythm and Blues Allstars and Barracuda (a Heart tribute band) will take to the stage of the Columbia Theatre, which is holding a concert for the Columbia Street fire relief fund. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the music begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $40 and available by calling 604-522-4500 or at www.the
columbia.ca.
2. Enjoy a laugh at Vagabond Players’ production of Alone Together, a comedy that takes a humorous look at what happens when an empty nest starts to fill back up. The play takes place on the stage of the Bernie Legge Theatre until Feb. 22. Tickets are $15 or $13 for students and seniors. For ticket reservations, call 604-521-0412.
3. Bundle up and take a walk on a beautiful, but cold, winter day. With the forecast projecting sunshine on Saturday and possible flurries on Sunday, it’s a great time to take a walk in some of the city’s scenic locations, including Queen’s Park, Sapperton Landing, Glenbrook Ravine, Westminster Pier Park and the riverfront esplanade.
4. Celebrate Family Day on Monday, Feb. 10 with entertainment and activities galore for all ages at Fraser River Discovery Centre (788 Quayside Dr.) and River Market (810 Quayside Dr). The fun takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thousands of people lined up for a day of fun at last year’s inaugural event at the Fraser River Discovery Centre, so two locations are part of this year’s action.
5. Check out some of the city’s diverse recreational offerings on Family Day when city facilities will be celebrating Family Day. Community members can enjoy free tours on the Samson V on the waterfront, water activities at Canada Games Pool, free fitness classes, entertainment and crafts at Centennial Community Centre, a tour and free arts and crafts in the greenhouse in Queen’s Park, a loonie skate at Moody Park Arena, free gymnastics and trampoline sessions at Queen’s Park Arenex, free activities at the youth centre and a free pancake breakfast, indoor playground and other activities at the Queensborough Community Centre.
