A new initiative aims to create a Downtown New West where everyone feels like they belong.

Community members are invited to participate in the Will You Be My Neighbour initiative, which is working to create a welcoming Downtown New Westminster

Betina Wheeler, a Downtown resident speaking on behalf of the Will You Be My Neighbour team, encourages folks to get involved in the initiative.

“Imagine a Downtown New Westminster where everyone feels they belong – where connections are strong, and support is readily available,” she said. “This is the vision behind the Will You Be My Neighbour initiative, a powerful movement dedicated to fostering a sense of community in our vibrant city.”

Wheeler said there is a simple yet profound goal at the heart of the initiative: to ensure that every resident feels a sense of belonging.

“By strengthening relationships and enhancing community support, we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive,” she said.

Wheeler said the project’s journey began when the neighbourhood was one of 13 communities across Canada accepted into Tamarack’s Circle of Actions cohort.

“This unique program equips community leaders with the skills and resources needed to develop impactful plans that promote belonging,” she explained. “Our team has representatives from the New Westminster Homelessness Coalition Society, Fraser Health, the CAN New West community leaders, Downtown BIA, Purpose, and the city. Through a series of workshops, coaching, and access to innovative tools, we’re committed to turning this vision into reality.”

Wheeler said this project and other Circle of Actions projects across the county are informing Tamarack's efforts to advocate for a national belonging strategy.

“Our community gatherings kicked off this summer. We hosted a laughter yoga event at Pier Park, bringing smiles and connections to residents,” she said. “This is just the beginning of our journey together.”

The Will You Be My Neighbour team is working to connect with the community, map local assets, and organize events that spark relationship-building. Its most recent event was a Community Café at WAVES on Columbia Street.

“Looking ahead to the new year, we’re planning an open-mic night centred on the theme of belonging – an opportunity for everyone to share their voice and connect with others,” Wheeler said.

The Will You Be My Neighbour team invites community members to complete an online survey that is designed to gather input on fostering belonging. People who fill out the survey by its Oct. 31 deadline will be entered into a draw to win a $50 gift card for el Santo restaurant.

“Your insights are invaluable in shaping our initiatives,” Wheeler said. “Participating is a great way to make your voice heard and contribute to a more vibrant community.”

By getting involved in the initiative, Wheeler said folks are not just participating in an event, they are also helping to create a community where everyone feels welcome and valued.

“By engaging in activities that improve our shared environment, we can cultivate a vibrant and cohesive downtown that reflects the spirit of New Westminster,” she said.

“If this sounds interesting to you, we invite residents of New Westminster to join us in this exciting journey,” Wheeler said. “Together, we can build a downtown where everyone feels at home, connected, and supported. Let’s come together and transform our community into a place of belonging!”
