Active New Westminster community volunteer Debbie Tommila will be walking 10 kilometres in New Westminster to support construction of a badly-needed classroom at a small school in the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa.
This takes place on April 15 to 24 as she takes part in the 2022 Virtual Sun Run to raise money for Shiloh Place Orphanage.
“Without an education, leading to job opportunities, young people will remain trapped in poverty,” said Tommila.
“So the materials to build another simple classroom will open a way to education and a better future for the children, their families and the community.”
A bag of cement is about $20 in Lubumbashi or $2 per kilometre in recognition of Tommila’s walk.
“We have donations for the initial preparation work and for the thousands of locally made bricks for the new classroom,” said Chantal Kasongo, founder of SPO. “About $1,830 is needed for the supplies to make finishing concrete, including delivery of the materials to our site.”
Donations of $25 or more can receive a tax-deductible receipt. For more information about Shiloh Place Orphanage Society, or to donate online, go to www.shilohplace.ca.
