Katherine Freund-Hainsworth is delving into history through art.
Freund-Hainsworth is the featured artist at the New Westminster Public Library's reference gallery this month, with an art exhibition inspired by B.C. Heritage Week.
Her Marking History Through Art series blends two-dimensional mixed-media art on paper with written history. This exhibition follows the 2014 B.C. Heritage Week Theme of "Heritage Afloat," with works illustrating the theme within New Westminster's waters.
It marks Freund-Hainsworth's ninth consecutive annual Heritage Week exhibition at the library.
A press release notes that her exhibitions are popular with library users, "from the historically minded to the curious art lover."
"Her artwork is accompanied by written text, both interpreting and revealing historic and creative meanings," the release notes. "Freund-Hainsworth's exhibition explores the expected subjects as her art takes you on a creative trip through time, inviting you along on a modern vacation that tours through this visual past."
Freund-Hainsworth's mixed-media works involve drawing, painting, printmaking and photography, in combination with historical photographs from the library's and the New Westminster Museum and Archives' collections.
"This type of art, combined with my research and writing, is a creative mix that lets me take a wonderful journey where there is no end in sight," she said in the release. "I love the versatility of this wonderful combination."
Freund-Hainsworth is the recent Bernie Legge Cultural Award winner for 2013, having been recognized for her extensive artwork and writing about the city's history. She is the author of A New Westminster Album: Glimpses of the City as it Was, a local history bestseller that sold out its print run of 4,500 copies.
Her art show is working in unison with a presentation by historian Archie Miller of A Sense of History Research Services. The presentation will be held in the library auditorium on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m.
Marking History Through Art can be seen upstairs at the New Westminster Public Library, 716 Sixth Ave., until Feb. 28.
It's free and open during library hours.
