We live in a world where entertainment is quite literally at our fingertips…

But when was the last time you were surprised?

This November you can experience a performance that transcends expectations at Nufonia Must Fall, a live stage adaptation of Kid Koala’s celebrated graphic novel by the same name.

Under the direction of Oscar-winning production designer K.K. Barrett (Her, Where the Wild Things Are, Adaptation, Being John Malkovich), Nufonia Must Fall will see the internationally acclaimed musician and turntable virtuoso joined by a team of fifteen puppeteers, musicians, and cinematographers, who will film, animate and soundtrack the graphic novel in real-time.

“It is a big show for a big stage. An interdisciplinary masterpiece”, says Erin Jeffery, Communications and Marketing Director at Massey Theatre.”

Montreal-born Kid Koala is best known as a DJ, turntablist, producer, and soundtrack composer. Since his debut album Carpal Tunnel Syndrome was released in 2000, Kid Koala, born Eric Yick Keung San, has gone on to tour and collaborated with acts like Radiohead and the Gorillaz while producing graphic novels, soundtracks, and innovative, envelope-pushing live performances along the way.

Nufonia Must Fall is another thrilling left-turn for a musician who has spent the last 24 years surprising his audience. At the core of this dialogue-free performance is a heartfelt love story suitable for the whole family. Set in a bleak black-and-white city, Nufonia tells the story of a music-loving T4 robot who falls in love with a female roboticist just as a newer, more efficient robot threatens to make his entire existence obsolete. The performance will also feature an original score performed live by Kid Koala on piano and turntable while accompanied by the Nufonia String Quartet.

Needless to say, you won’t find anything like this on Netflix, or any screen for that matter.

“With so many options of entertainment at people's fingertips, they’re forgetting about the magic of live performance,” Jeffery told us excitedly over email. “Outside of the performance itself, attending live events provides the opportunity to connect with neighbours and friends you haven’t met yet.”

So if you’re tired of aimlessly scrolling through Netflix… and Crave…. And Prime Video, only to binge-watch your comfort show, it might be time to revisit the live stage. Nufonia Must Fall has already been met with critical praise for its performances across Japan and the United States, you can experience it for yourself this Nov.15 and 16 only at the Massey Theatre in New West.
