Theatre fans, take note.

Douglas College students have two upcoming productions that you’ll want to make time for.

First up is Antigone, onstage from Friday, March 9 to Friday, March 16 in the Studio Theatre (Room N4140).

Thrasso Petras directs Kathleen Weiss’ contemporary adaptation of Sophocles’ classical tragedy, in which a woman vows to bury her brother’s body and defies what she considers a heartless political edict.

A press release notes that Weiss’ adaptation takes Sophocles’ intellectual argument – a debate between secular and spiritual power – and works toward an extended metaphor about the aftermath of war, its physical and psychological consequences. (Note that no children under age six are allowed.)

The following week, running from Friday, March 16 to Friday, March 23, Lion in the Streets is onstage at the Laura C. Muir Performing Arts Theatre (Room N4100).

The play by award-winning Canadian playwright Judith Thompson tells the stories of many interconnected lives, and one little girl whose experience threads them all together. It’s directed by Claire Fogal. (Note that it’s appropriate for ages 17 and up, with mature/disturbing subject matter and descriptions of sexual violence.)

Both productions take place at Douglas College’s New Westminster campus, 700 Royal Ave. Tickets range from $10 to $20. For all the details, see www.tinyurl.com/DCTheatre2018.
