A local lighting designer is part of the team bringing a new Canadian musical to life.

Jonathan (better known as Jono) Kim is on board for This is Now, a world premiere of a new musical by singer-songwriter Kate MacColl. The musical is onstage June 22 to 30 at Studio 16, 1555 West Seventh Ave. (at Granville) in Vancouver.

It stars Kaja Tecza and Allegra Wright in the roles of two very different friends who come together after a decade apart, and whose spontaneous road trip together teaches them both about each other – and themselves.

Kim, who’s a native of New West, is a familiar presence in the Vancouver theatre world. He has earned Jessie nominations for previous work on The City & The City (Upintheair Theatre and The Only Animal) and The Nether (Redcurrant Collective). He holds a bachelor of fine arts degree in theatre production and design by SFU’s School for the Contemporary Arts.
