Rapidly rising river levels mean you should take care near the fast-moving water.

With a high streamflow advisory in effect, New Westminster residents are warned to use caution in Fraser River shoreline areas, including Sapperton Landing (seen here during a time of lower water levels).

New Westminster residents are warned to use caution around the Fraser River shoreline this week.

The B.C. River Forecast Centre has issued a high streamflow advisory, which remains in effect through the week. A high streamflow advisory means that river levels are expected to rise rapidly but that no major flooding is expected, according to a notice from the City of New Westminster. Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

Given the elevated water levels, the city is urging residents to remain aware and use caution when around the Fraser River shoreline — in particular Quayside, Port Royal, the Braid industrial area, Sapperton Landing and other exposed and low-lying areas adjacent to the Fraser and Brunette rivers.

Residents are also warned to keep pets out of and away from fast-moving water.

You're also warned to be cautious when parking your car in underground areas next to the river, since below-ground parking areas may experience minor flooding or seepage during high water levels.

"Residents and strata representatives are responsible for monitoring their parking areas, particularly those that contain electrical rooms, mechanical rooms and equipment in case of flooding," warns a notice from the city. "Affected residents may wish to consider alternate parking arrangements for vehicles during this period."

The city says it will continue to conduct regular dike patrols and liaise with provincial officials; if necessary, updates will be made at the city's website and social media channels.
