New West residents are invited to support the Parkinson Super Walk.

The Parkinson Super Walk is making its return to New West next weekend.

Each September, people across Canada take part in Parkinson Super Walk events to raise money for Parkinson Canada. Parkinsons, a progressive brain disorder for which there is no cure, currently affects more than 100,000 Canadians.

Members of Century House’s Parkinson Support Group participates in the annual Super Walk and invites community members to join them in support of this fight against this disease.

The 2024 Parkinson Super Walk is on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Moody Park, with registration beginning at 11:30 a.m. and the walk around the park getting underway at noon.

Kathy Lynn, who chairs the support group at Century House, hopes the event will raise $2,500. She had signed up to speak at city council’s Aug. 26 meeting to raise awareness about the fundraiser, but technical issues prevented her presentation from being heard.

Mayor Patrick Johnstone, who attended last year’s walk, said community members can register for the walk online or at the event, and they also donate online in support of this important cause.

“Funds raised in B.C. through this event help the Parkinson Society of British Columbia continue to grow its programs and services, expand advocacy efforts and increase its investment in innovative research,” he said. “It’s a short walk route around Moody Park. It was well attended last year, and it was fun.”

Coun. Ruby Campbell encourages community members to contact Century House if they’re interested in learning more about the Parkinson Support Group.

“It is a support group that meets monthly for people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers,” she said.

The Parkinson Support Group meets on the third Wednesday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon. It is open to Century House members and other community members, whether they were diagnosed recently or decades ago.

“If you are a person with Parkinson’s or a caregiver interested in sharing ideas, coping strategies, information and resources, you are warmly welcomed to this support group,” said the Century House website. “We welcome all persons with Parkinson’s disease as well as their caregivers. It is a friendly and supportive group. We share our stories and experiences as well as bringing you up to date on the activities being offered by the Parkinson Society.”
