Serious, spooky and fun events are happening in New West this weekend. These are the Record’s top picks for the Aug. 29 to Sept. 2 long weekend.

The New West Farmers Market is holding a Back to School Bash at its Aug. 29 market.

Thursday, Aug. 29

New West Farmers Market

Kick off the long weekend a day early with a visit to the New West Farmers Market’s Back to School Bash. It features vendors, food trucks, live music, children’s activities (including a balloon artist, face painting), and more. It also includes a kid’s clothing swap; you can donate any gently used kids clothes you have and take home some clothes for your little ones.

Friday, Aug. 30

International Overdose Awareness Day.

Commemorate International Overdose Awareness Day by remembering those whose lives have been lost to toxic drugs. Organizers will be distributing resources and limited copies of the new zine, We Bend, We Don’t Break.

Saturday, Aug. 31

The Ghosts of New Westminster

Enjoy a spooky summer evening and learn some haunting stories from New Westminster’s past. A Coldspotters Paranormal’s guide will share stories and information about paranormal activity while leading forks on the Ghosts of New Westminster walking tour. The tours are about 1.5 kilometres in length.

  • When: Saturday, Aug. 31, 8 to 9 p.m.
  • Where: Hyack Square, 800 Columbia St.
  • Details: Tickets are $25.83 and available online. Attendees will meet in Hyack Square; check-in starts 10 minutes before start time, and the tour starts promptly at 8 p.m.

Cars and Coffee’s Ice Cream Run 2

Cruise to Queensborough for the Greater Vancouver Cars and Coffee’s Ice Cream Run 2.  Car aficionados will meet up for “ice cream, coffee, caffeine, octane and outrageous automobiles” in Queensborough.

  • When: Saturday, Aug. 31, 6 to 8:15 p.m.
  • Where: Attendees will get their coffee and ice cream at Starbucks and the Marble Slab Creamery in Queensborough Landing Shopping Centre (805 Boyd St.) but will park in the square across from Starbucks.

Discovery Days

Say so long to summer at Fraser River Discovery Centre’s Discovery Days event. The theme of this weekend’s programming is Gather and Give Back, which focuses on the various types of harvests of the Fraser River basin and their seasonal variations. Families can participate in a simulation activity of harvesting and weaving to understand how cedar is used by Indigenous communities across the Fraser River basin, attend a story time about the language of seasons, do a beading activity, and use a phenology wheel to learn about the seasonal changes related to harvests. 

  • When: Saturday, Aug. 31 to Monday, Sept. 2, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Where: Fraser River Discovery Centre, 788 Quayside Dr.
  • Details: Cost is included in admission to Discovery Centre. Admission prices and times of specific activities are available online

Monday, Sept. 2

Wet and Wild

Get wet and wild at the Ryall Spray Park with the City of New Westminster, where staff will offer giant games, water balloons and other family-friendly activities at Wet and Wild. (Mother Nature is forecasting warm sunny weather for the long weekend.)

  • When:  Monday, Sept. 2, 1 to3 p.m.
  • Where: Ryall Park, 920 Ewen Ave.
  • Details: Free. This event is weather dependent; updates will be posted online.
