CLEAN AIR CLIMB
Royal City resident Martin Kopelow recently climbed 48 storeys to glory in support of lung health.
Kopelow was among nearly 500 participants who scaled the 48 floors of the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre as part of the 11th annual Stairclimb for Clean Air.
All proceeds go toward vital lung health and air quality research, programs and initiatives.
According to the B.C. Lung Association, lung disease is the fourth leading cause of death in Canada, but it receives only a fraction of available health research dollars - something participants in the Stairclimb for Clean Air are trying to change.
"Over the Stairclimb event's 10-year history, they've helped raise $1.2 million to help fund advances in treatment," said a press release from the B.C. Lung Association. "To date, this year's event has raised well over $150,000. Post-event fundraising continues until March 23, 2012 and organizers hope to reach the $250,000 mark."
To make a donation in support of the one in five British Columbians who are suffering from breathing problems, call the B.C. Lung Association at 604731-5864 or email stair [email protected].
WATCH YOUR PETS
A New Westminster resident suggests Quayside residents keep an eye on their pets to prevent unwanted encounters with urban wildlife.
Ole Sorensen recently emailed The Record several photos of a raccoon, which has been spotted at the Quay. Sorensen also noted that a coyote has been spotted at the Quay several days during the early morning hours.
The City of New Westminster recently posted information on its website about coyotes, as well as a link to a video, Being Coyote Wise: Living with Urban Coyotes.
The information is found in the What's New section of the city's website, which is found at www.newwest city.ca.
PUB FUNDRAISER
Moonrakers Pub's recent jazz luncheon was a hit.
The Feb. 23 event raised more than $1,400 for the jazz ensemble at New Westminster Secondary School. The event raised money to help send students to the MusicFest in Ottawa, a national music festival for students that's being held in May.
