B.C. grants to support local sports in New Westminster

New Westminster sports groups get $357,000 in provincial funding through community gaming grants.

New Westminster Minor Hockey Association is among the New West sports organizations receiving a provincial grant.

New West-based sporting organizations have received provincial funding to help folks stay stay healthy, active and connected.

In a news release from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, the province said it is supporting 323 not-for-profit sports organizations on B.C.’s mainland and southwest region with more than $14.5 million in community gaming grants. Eight New West-based groups have received a total of $357,000 in community gaming grants for sports:

  • New Westminster Minor Hockey Association – $70,000
  • Royal City Hyacks Football Club – $10,000
  • Hyack Swim Club – $80,000
  • New Westminster Minor Softball Association – $9,000
  • New Westminster Minor Lacrosse Association – $20,000
  • British Columbia Artistic Swimming Association – $72,500
  • British Columbia Deaf Sports Federation – $76,000
  • British Columbia 5 Pin Bowlers' Association – $20,000

The news release provided details about grants handed out in 2023. This year's grant recipients will be announced in the fall.

“Sports connect our community and encourage a healthy lifestyle,” New Westminster MLA Jennifer Whiteside said in a news release from New Democrat BC government caucus. “I am thrilled that amazing organizations like the British Columbia Deaf Sports Federation are receiving funding so they can continue and expand their services.”

According to the province, funding for the sports sector is part of $140 million provided annually through community gaming grants to not-for-profit organizations throughout British Columbia. These grants help approximately 5,000 organizations to deliver ongoing programs and services in their communities.

The province’s news release stated that the community gaming grants program distributes up to $140 million worth of grants annually to not-for-profit organizations across British Columbia that improve and enrich the lives of people and communities. Provincial grants also fund projects and initiatives in the arts and culture, human and social services, public safety and environmental conservation sectors, as well as parent and district parent advisory councils in B.C. schools.
