A prominent B.C. athlete, who has raised money for flood victims in Pakistan, people affected by the Ukrainian humanitarian crisis, victims of the earthquake that shook Syria and Turkey and front-line workers during the pandemic, is back at it again.

This time he's lending a hand to help victims of the devastating floods that have submerged many North Indian states including Punjab.

Powerlifter Sumeet Sharma has long been known for his community service and had recently received a $1,000 scholarship from his alma matter, Douglas College, for his work on behalf of others.

“Innocent people have passed away due to the floods and over 26,000 people have been evacuated,” Sharma said. “Several homes have [also] been damaged. In order to overcome this horrible situation, [we need to] help the people of Punjab who have been affected by the floods. I am hoping this initiative encourages people to make a donation.”

Donation boxes will be set up from July 30 to Aug. 6 in New Westminster at Douglas College.

Donors can also head to boxes set up in Surrey at Supplement King locations in the Strawberry Hill Shopping Centre and at the Newton Square Mall.

In addition to the donation boxes set up in Lower Mainland, his team is also partnering with non-profit organization Khalsa Aid to raise money.

According to its website, the international NGO is based upon the Sikh principle “Recognize the whole human race as one” and helps provide humanitarian aid in disaster areas and civil conflict zones around the world..

Donations can also be made through Khalsa Aid’s website.
