A suspect was apprehended after police received a 911 call about an intruder in a New West residence.

New Westminster (NWPD) and Transit Police (MVTP) teamed up to find a stolen backpack after a local resident found an intruder in her home and called 911.

Around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday (Aug. 20), NWPD received a 911 call from a resident who had just encountered an intruder in her home.

When confronted, police say the suspect fled with a backpack from the home.

"New Westminster Police Department officers searched the area for a suspect and informed our partners at Metro Vancouver Transit Police about the ongoing search," reads a news release today (Aug. 22).

"Minutes later, Metro Vancouver Transit Police located the suspect with the stolen backpack on a SkyTrain at the Sapperton SkyTrain station."

According to police, the suspect was arrested without incident and the backpack was reunited with its rightful owner.

"We'd like to thank the officers at Metro Vancouver Transit Police who assisted us in this investigation," said NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Justine Thom.

"It is bold for a suspect to enter a home that is occupied to steal belongings. This is very concerning behavior and likely scary for those who were home at the time."

Members of the household have been offered the services of the Victim Assistance Unit.

"The New Westminster Police Department thanks the resident whose call to 911 ensured the quick apprehension of the suspect," the NWPD's statement added.

The suspect - a 48-year-old woman who lives in Vancouver - was transported to NWPD cells and is awaiting a court appearance.
