City bank was targeted

Police arrest a Vancouver man in connection with a string of area robberies

New Westminster police have arrested a man wanted in connection to several bank robberies, including one at the Bank of Montreal in Columbia Square last Friday.

According to Sgt. Diana McDaniel, police responded to a hold-up alarm at the bank just before 2 p.m. on Friday.

The suspect allegedly handed over a note claiming he had a gun, and demanded money and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

A New Westminster constable attended the scene and radioed fellow officers with the suspect's description. Shortly after, police located a man on foot matching the suspect's description. A search of the suspect turned up the money taken from the bank.

Vancouver resident Eldon Peters, 38, is now facing one charge of robbery stemming from the incident.

Peters, though, was already wanted in connection with two recent bank robberies in Burnaby and five similar ones in Edmonton, according to police. Burnaby RCMP have since charged Peters with two more counts of robbery.

Peters has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance on Feb. 7.
