CBC Vancouver journalist Justin McElroy has been named Douglas College’s 2023 honorary fellow .
Announcing the honour, Kathy Denton, president of the New Westminster-based institution, said, “Justin’s dedication to providing the province with honest, timely and integral news reporting — especially during times of uncertainty — reflects the core values that Douglas College holds so greatly.
“He has shown true resilience in his field of work, and for that we are proud to award him with this honour.”
In 2022, McElroy was named one of Vancouver’s most influential people by Vancouver Magazine for his storytelling through charts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a statement, McElroy said he was honoured by the college's recognition. "I'm humbled that Douglas College would think I'm deserving of becoming an honorary fellow,” he said. “I truly resonate with the college’s motto of doing what you love, and I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to follow my own dreams by reporting on the province I love.”
The CBC reporter's accolades include a Jack Webster award for Excellence in Digital Journalism, and two BC Region Radio Television Digital News Association awards for data storytelling (Global BC, 12 Deadliest Highways) and sports journalism (Global BC, An Oral History of the Vancouver Grizzlies).
