New Westminster police seized drugs and weapons from a downtown New West apartment.

A midnight raid on a downtown New West apartment resulted in the seizure of drugs and weapons.

The New Westminster Police Department said its Street Crime Unit and the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team joined forces to execute a search warrant on a property near the 300 block of Agnes Street about midnight on Friday, Nov. 4. A NWPD press release said officers located drugs and weapons.

“As this investigation is ongoing, we aren’t sharing specific information on the drugs and weapons found in the suite,” Hailey Finnigan, the NWPD’s strategic communications coordinator, said in an email to the Record. “Know that these items were dangerous in nature and posed a risk to public safety.”

According to the police department, six people were arrested, and the investigation is ongoing.

The NWPD said this search warrant was connected to a lengthy investigation led by the NWPD’s Street Crime Unit, with the assistance of the Gang Suppression Unit, patrol and the Crime Reduction Unit.

“Drug trafficking and weapons possession pose an obvious risk to public safety and negatively affect the entire community,” NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Justine Thom said in a news release. “We take these offences very seriously, which is why our Street Crime Unit has devoted the time and energy to stop drug traffickers from profiting in our city. We’d like to thank the numerous teams for their assistance in this investigation.”

The New Westminster Police Department encourages residents who believe they are witnessing drug activity in their neighbourhood to call the NWPD at 604-525-5411.
