The Grand Parade is a walk on June 1 to raise awareness and funds for the needs of homeless seniors.

Seniors Services Society is asking for community assistance to walk and fundraise for the dignity and care for Canadian seniors who are homeless, or at-risk for homelessness.

“Our society helps vulnerable seniors 60-plus throughout the Lower Mainland with housing navigation support, temporary housing, and outreach in addition to non-medical supports and programs to enhance social connectivity and encourage seniors to stay in their homes, says Nipa Bhalla, the society’s resource development officer.

The Grand Paradeis a two- and five-kilometre walk that starts on the boardwalk between the Paddlewheel Pub and the Boathouse Restaurant at River Market. Things kick off at 10 a.m.

“We hope to engage all New Westminster walkers including business owners, families, parents, grandparents and students in a family-friendly walk to raise awareness and funds for seniors who are homeless or at-risk for homelessness in the Lower Mainland,” Bhalla says. “We are hoping businesses would consider this walk as a great team-building activity while contributing to an amazing local cause. We want to publicly honour seniors and their incredible contributions to the vibrant community of New Westminster.”

The goal is to raise awareness about seniors housing issues within the community and $35,000 to support temporary housing, outreach and housing navigation for homeless seniors.

Seniors Services Society is small organization with a mighty mission to connect BC adults 60+ with individual supports & housing navigation services to enhance their lives.

A light snack is set to follow the walk, and walkers are encouraged to create or join a team. Costumes as optional and encouraged. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the River Market. Route marshals and rest stop attendants will be available for support along the route.
