A man was arrested after allegedly swinging a hatchet at another man in downtown New Westminster.
The New Westminster Police Department reports that a man called 911 shortly after midnight on Tuesday, Nov. 28 claiming he had found someone in his vehicle, and, when confronted, the individual swung a hatchet at him before fleeing.
According to the NWPD, the victim followed the suspect as he ran from the 300 block of Columbia Street to Front Street. Officers located a man fitting the suspect’s description hiding in some thorny bushes near the Fraser River and arrested him without incident.
“Violence like this has no place in New Westminster,” NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Sanjay Kumar said in a press release. “We’re glad the caller was not hurt in this instance and made the right decision by calling 911 when they saw this crime in progress.”
New Westminster police are recommending charges related to assault with a weapon, mischief under $5,000, and theft under $5,000.
