Here's what's on at summer school in New Westminster

Learning through nature? Check. Making a movie? Check. Your kids can explore a host of options in SD40's summer programs.

Hands-on courses in arts, science, nature, writing, sports and more are on the agenda for summer school in New Westminster.

School District 40 is offering a range of summer programs for elementary, middle and high school students during July and August. Registration for summer programs opens Monday, April 17 at 10 a.m.

Elementary school courses

Students entering kindergarten through Grade 5 have a range of course options, including those aimed at skill development in reading, writing and numeracy and those aimed at hands-on learning in areas including the arts, science and sports. There’s also a writers’ workshop for primary students and a Learning Through Nature and Gardens course.

Elementary school classes are held at Lord Kelvin Elementary School and run from July 4 to 14, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. daily.

Courses are free for students currently enrolled in kindergarten to Grade 4 in New Westminster or those enrolled to start in Grade 1 or higher in the fall.

Non-credit short courses (for students entering grades 6 to 12)

The district is offering a number of non-credit courses for middle school and high school students to build their skills and knowledge in a variety of areas, including foundations of literacy and numeracy, math skill building and French immersion. Other courses include fitness and conditioning for football players, an integrated studies course in English, Arts and Movie Making, an introduction to culinary arts and an introduction to Japanese language and culture. (Grade levels vary by course, so check full offerings for the grade you’re interested in.)

The classes will run at New Westminster Secondary School, Monday to Friday from July 4 to 21, 9 a.m. to noon daily.

Credit courses for high school students (grades 10 to 12)

These for-credit courses run July 4 to Aug. 4 and give students a chance to upgrade a class, get ahead or explore an extra course.

Options include a variety of English and language arts classes, mathematics, science and social studies.
