The Editor:
Well, New West council, you have touted the grand opening of the new PAL Lodge featuring more than 60 affordable housing units for seniors who are long term members of the Performing Arts, and the building's wonderful location in a prime area supported by easily access to shops, buses and SkyTrain station.
Several years ago, I attended the council meeting where this development was to be approved.
I spoke asking council how non-profit seniors units could be approved for just a specific group of seniors who would be mostly coming in from other communities.
What about New West residents who had lived here for years, supported local businesses and raised families here? What good would that do them?
One councillor said it was open to all, but I explained I had tried to apply but had to include my performing arts resume and ACTRA number in order to do so.
They all looked stunned as if it wasn't true.
As confirmed in a recent article, those coveted units will be for long-term performing arts seniors only.
Another article said New West rents have risen to $2,500 per month on average.
Impossible for seniors on a pension, even if you are on the Safer Program for rent subsidy.
The few purpose built subsidized buildings for seniors in New West have years long waiting lists and you basically have to wait for someone to die before you can even move up a notch on the list. Even then, you may not get a unit in New West.
I should have gone to Clown School or become a stripper and paid union dues for my "art." Then I would be moving into a brand new unit in a great location.
Until then, I will covet my wee ancient apartment and hope council does not approve rezoning for yet another tower on this property before I die.
