Letter: Traffic light 'necessary' in front of New West school

One letter writer believes a crossing guard for Herbert Spencer Elementary is good, but it's not enough when encountering ignorant drivers.

Re: New West hears plea for traffic light near Herbert Spencer Elementary (Nov. 6, 2023)

Yes, I do believe the intersection at 6th Avenue and 2nd Street needs a traffic light.

As both a driver and pedestrian, I think a light would create a much safer place for this exceptionally busy intersection.

For years, I walked both my children to Herbert Spencer Elementary and this intersection is the reason why.

It is unsafe for many reasons and although having a crossing guard is essential, they can't monitor all areas and can’t control aggressive, impatient or speedy drivers.

As a driver, this is an intersection where much care and attention is needed as it is a heavily congested area with cars and pedestrians especially at the start and end of school.

And due to after school activities, and as children leave the Out of School Care program, it is still busy long before or after the crossing guard arrives or leaves, so it makes a traffic light all the more necessary.

Thanks to Larry Church who has been working so hard to make this a safer place for all.
