New Westminster’s very own Nadejda Vassev is among 16 people across the country awarded the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Early Childhood Education.

Vassev is a junior kindergarten teacher at Urban Academy in New Westminster and has been with the program since its inception five years ago. She has seen the class size grow from five students to 20, according to a media release from Urban Academy.

“When they called to tell me, I couldn’t believe it. I’m overwhelmed and humbled by this award,” Vassev said in the release.

The prime minister’s award recognizes outstanding teachers for their dedication and skills in helping children get a head start so they can succeed at school.

Vassev, or Ms. Nadia as she is known to her students, has helped develop Urban Academy’s junior Kindergarten into “one of the best junior Kindergartens available in the region.”

“Mrs. Vassev has been part of the significant growth that Urban Academy has been experiencing, as many parents in the community have heard about Urban Academy’s success with early childhood development,” stated the release.
