Front Street will soon be off-limits to all vehicles.
The Pattullo Bridge replacement project team has announced that the full closure of Front Street is set to begin the week of June 17. The full road closure, which will be in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week, will last for about six months.
During the time that Front Street is closed, businesses will remain open and are accessible via the Front Street mews.
According to a notice from the project team, most work activities on Front Street will take place Monday to Saturday. Noisy work activities will be completed during the day as much as possible, but some non-noisy work activities will take place at night and on Sundays.
While Front Street is closed, drivers will be detoured to Columbia Street.
Trucks will be detoured to designated truck routes such as Royal Avenue and Braid Street/East Eighth Avenue during the day. Alternatively, trucks may use 10th Avenue both day and night.
The notice states that traffic control personnel will be on site to assist when necessary. It said that all traffic pattern changes and detour routes will be well signed.
“Drivers may experience longer than normal travel times due to detours and higher traffic volumes. Nearby residents may hear some noise while girders are bolted into place,” said the notice. “We appreciate your patience while this work is underway.”
In December 2023, Transportation Investment Corporation provided the City of New Westminster with a memo about 2024 construction works and associated traffic impacts. At that time, it said a six‐month closure of Front Street would be required for temporary tower construction and to complete the girder installation and bridge deck construction over Front Street.
