Man in distress sparks large police response to New Westminster Quay

'Out of an abundance of caution, additional officers were called to the scene,' New Westminster police said about a mental health call at the Quay Tuesday morning.

A man in distress drew a large police response to New Westminster Quay Tuesday morning.

The New Westminster Police Department got a 911 call at about 10 a.m. from someone concerned about a man in distress along the boardwalk, according to an emailed statement from the police department.

“Police located the man in distress and made efforts to de-escalate the situation,” said the statement.

The man was speaking Tagalog, and officers enlisted the help of a Tagalog-speaking passerby, police said.

“With the help of that citizen it became clear to officers that the man was in severe distress and required transportation to local hospital,” said the statement.

After finding the man’s identification, officers also learned the man had been violent to police officers before.

“Out of an abundance of caution, additional officers were called to the scene,” said the statement.

The man was taken into custody and transported to hospital.
