New site provides resources for families

Local families can connect with other families and service providers - and get information about resources and other events - through a new website.

Local families can connect with other families and service providers - and get information about resources and other events - through a new website.

Kids New West is a site that is jointly produced by the city's early childhood development committee (for kids zero to six years of age) and the middle childhood development committee (for kids ages six to 12), which share a vision of a community with healthy, happy, and resilient children.

Committee members, who include representatives of local non-profit organizations, public agencies, interested parents and community members, work on projects and events that focus on supporting child wellness and their relationships with their parents, peers and community.

The website can be found at kidsnewwest.ca.

CHANGING PLACES

A new face is at the helm of the Quayside Community Board.

After serving as president for six years, James Crosty has stepped down and will now serve as the group's past president.

The newly created position is intended to ensure continuity for the rail noise issue and the Quayside Boardwalk Festival and Sale.

"It has been a rewarding experience serving as president of this residents' association," he said in a news release. "We have opened up the boardwalk to people all over the Lower Mainland with our Quayside Boardwalk Festival and Sale and watched as Light up the Quay grows each and every year."

Penny McIvor, former-ly the group's secretary, is the board's new president. The rest of the board includes: Maria Bisognin (vice president), Maureen Albanese (treasurer), Gavin Sawle (secretary) and Ted Eddy (director).

More than 70 people attended the Quayside Community Board's annual general meeting on Jan. 25 at River Market. The event featured guest speakers, door prizes and presentations of awards to residents who participated in the sixth annual Light up the Quay contest, which encourages residents to decorate their homes with Christmas lights.

"We intend to make this event bigger this year, making the Quayside boardwalk New Westminster's candy cane lane," said organizing chair Lorraine Fletcher.

Grocery time

The Thrifty Foods store in Sapperton will soon launch Sendial in New Westminster.
