A city councillor is launching a series of events to support local businesses and charities.

Coun. Ruby Campbell is kicking off her Dine and Donate Local – Community Dinner for a Cause series on Sunday, Feb. 23 from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

“So, this will be a series that I'll be doing over the year,” she said. “It's primarily to promote local businesses, restaurants, and to support local charities.”

The first Dine and Donate Local event is taking place at the 4 Seasons Chaat House at 420 Sixth St., which specializes in authentic Indian street food from the Himalayan foothills. The fundraising event features a buffet dinner.

Campbell said tickets are $75 and will cover the food and a donation to a local charity. Proceeds from the first event will go to the New West Hospice Society.

“Hopefully we can do a few of these over the year to promote local businesses and some charities,” she said.

Tickets are available online.

The city’s two New West Progressive councillors are teaming up to host another Councillor Café event.

Councillors Daniel Fontaine and Paul Minhas are hosting their next Councillor Café event on Thursday, Jan. 30 from 7 to 9 p.m. The free event is taking place at Holy Trinity Cathedral’s parish hall at 514 Carnarvon St.

“I'm very pleased to announce that we were able to secure Michael Geller, who's a retired architect and developer, to come in to speak to the community about density, densification, public amenities,” Fontaine said. “So, very much looking forward to hearing Mr. Geller and to meeting everyone who attends the that forum.”

Registration isn’t required, and everyone is invited to drop in to the event.

A New West Progressives notice said Geller, a Vancouver-based retired architect, planner, real estate consultant and property developer, will speak about “the need to properly building future density” in New Westminster.

“This means ensuring we plan and construct the proper public amenities (parks, playgrounds, schools) at the same time as we plan for new major developments like the Columbia Square development at 88th 10th Street,” said the notice. “Mr. Geller will also be responding to questions from the attendees in a formal Q&A session.”
