Life on the boardwalk is changing in New Westminster.
The city announced it is banning cyclists from riding on the boardwalk, beginning on today.
Effective Sunday, April 12, cyclists will be prohibited from riding on the #NewWest boardwalk (Rialto Crt. to Westminster Pier Park) and will be detoured onto Quayside Drive,” read a tweet from the City of New Westminster Twitter account. “Thank you for your cooperation.”
The move was welcomed by some in response to the tweet.
“City just demonstrates that MUPs are ineffective,” tweeted @stickers66. “Good...let's make the stretch of Quayside Dr a proper bikeroute. Putting the bikes on the boardwalk was great in the 1980s.”
1/ The progression of this is funny (not really). City: ok people, we need you to do this thing and we know you can do it, so we're asking but not enforcing. People: doing it anyway. City: ok, we'll enforce some things, but we know you won't do more things, so we'll leave it.

Others had suggestions for the city and questions.
“And will there be any traffic control in place to reduce motor vehicle traffic, or control the speed they drive?” tweeted @Philridinbikes. “Or at least put some more signage/indicators that it's a shared road? It feels dangerous to ride at the best of times.”
