A New West man has been charged in relation to an Aug. 11 crash in Alberta that killed two people.

A New Westminster man faces serious charges in relation to a multi-vehicle crash that killed two people and injured two others in Alberta in August.

Police in Cochrane, Alta. sent out a news release yesterday, saying New West resident Christopher Raymond Boucha, 50, has been charged with two counts each of criminal negligence causing death, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

The charges are related to a crash on Highway 1 near Morley, Alta. on Aug. 11. that killed a couple from Invermere aged 75 and 78, according to the release.

Boucha had been driving a rented five-tonne cube van, Cochrane RCMP media liaison officer Cpl. Troy Savinkoff told the Record.

In earlier reports, police said an eastbound cube van had crossed over into westbound lanes and crashed head-on into a car.

A semi driving behind the car had been unable to stop and rear-ended the car, which led to another westbound cube van driving into the back of the semi.

The car with the two seniors in it had been “sandwiched” between the two large vehicles, according to police reports at the time.

Tuesday’s Cochrane RCMP news release said the charges against Boucha had been laid after a lengthy police investigation.

There is a warrant out for Boucha's arrest, according to Savinkoff, and "attempts have been made" to pick him up.

He will have to be taken to Alberta to face the charges, Savinkoff said.
