A third suspect has been arrested in connection to an attempted home invasion in New West in July.
According to a New Westminster Police Department news release, NWPD officers responded to a report of a masked individual holding a firearm, who was allegedly attempting to get into a home in the 900 block of 12th Street on July 8. Police say the suspect was unable to gain access to the home and fled the area.
“New Westminster Police patrol members flooded the area and located the suspect, who was found to be in possession of a balaclava, rifle, and ammunition,” said an Aug. 23 news release from the police department. “Initial investigation determined that the suspect had arrived at the home by way of a stolen vehicle that was also recovered in the area.”
The police department stated a second suspect believed to be associated to the incident was also arrested in close proximity to the vehicle.
“Both suspects were released with numerous conditions,” said the news release. “Charges are being recommended relating to firearms offences, breach of probation, and attempt break and enter with intent to commit an Indictable offence.”
The New Westminster Police Department reports that its Major Crime Unit took conduct of the investigation, With the assistance of the NWPD’s forensic identification unit, Major Crime conducted an extensive examination of the scene and surrounding area.
Detectives determined that a third suspect was involved in the incident. On Aug. 15, this suspect was arrested for attempt break and enter with intent to commit an indictable offence, and using a firearm to attempt an indictable offence.
“Anytime firearms are involved is very concerning, and our detectives are working hard to gather evidence to support the investigation,” NWPD Sgt. Andrew Leaver said in the news release. “This appears to be a targeted and isolated event, and we do not believe there is any increased risk to public safety.”
