The New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) has issued a pickpocketing warning after a woman recently had her debit card stolen.
The local resident's card was then used for $2,500 in purchases and withdrawals. The investigation is ongoing, according to a news release today, Aug. 12.
“Sadly, thieves are using a variety of tactics to prey upon some of our most vulnerable citizens,” NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Andrew Leaver said.
“Distraction tactics are common, as well as thieves appearing to be helpful and offering to assist someone with bags or luggage.”
The NWPD is encouraging residents to keep money, cards and valuables close to them and ensure bags and purses are in front of the body.
Residents should also be aware if a stranger tries to point something out to them or distract them in any way.
Those who have been a victim of theft are encouraged to report it to the New Westminster Police Department at 604-525-5411.
