New Westminster police are seeking the public’s help after two 12-year-old girls who were approached by a man in a van.

The New Westminster Police Department is appealing to the public to assist in providing CCTV footage or dash-cam footage that may help in an investigation of a suspicious interaction that occurred the weekend. The incident occurred on Saturday, Oct. 26 at about 11 a.m. in the 200 block of 11th Street.

According to the NWPD, police received a report of two 12-year-old girls being approached by a male driver in a white cargo van while they were standing outside a residence. The driver asked if they wanted to go for a ride; the girls immediately left and informed a trusted adult about the incident.

At this time, the suspect can only be described as male. Police are working to obtain a more details about the driver’s appearance.

“We’re asking anyone who lives or drives through the area to please check to see if they have footage of the 200 block of 11th Street between 10:50 a.m. and 11:10 a.m.,” Sgt. Andrew Leaver said in a news release. “We’re wanting parents to be aware that this happened, and we invite parents to have a conversation with their kids about the risks of accepting rides from strangers.”
