Parts of downtown New West were behind caution tape as part of a police investigation.

A part of Columbia Street was behind yellow caution tape this morning while police investigated an early morning incident.

Some downtown residents took to social media to question why Columbia Street was taped off between Sixth and Eighth Streets. Others reported seeing blood on the sidewalk near Columbia and Begbie streets and questioned why police officers were shining lights into storefronts on Columbia Street.

“Investigators closed Columbia Street to search the area after someone was located with injuries,” said Hailey Finnigan, the New Westminster Police Department’s strategic communications coordinator. “Investigators have determined that no assault occurred and that there is no increased risk to public safety.”

According to Finnigan, Columbia Street was closed for two hours, after the injured man was located on Columbia Street. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on Tuesday, April 18.

“Officers believe this person was injured by broken glass,” she said in an email to the Record.
