Reducing crime and enhancing safety are just some of the goals of the New Westminster Police Department during the next four years.

On Friday, the department released details of its strategic plan up to 2019, which included a list of objectives and directions.

A department press release outlined the strategic plan:

·         Reduce crime and enhance safety. In order to achieve this goal, the NWPD has established three main objectives: enhancing traffic and road safety; increasing police visibility and public safety; and focusing resources on high crime areas and prolific offenders.

  • Improve engagement with key partners and communities. The three main objectives that are set out to reach this goal include improving external communication; building effective relationships; and, maintaining strong relationships with policing partners.

·         Optimize use of department resources. To accomplish this strategic direction, the three main objectives include ensuring efficient use of personnel and technology; supporting training and leadership development; and, enhancing internal communication and fostering a healthy workplace.

“Over the past several months we have consulted widely, drawing on the insights of citizens, community groups, business representatives, elected officials, as well as the knowledge and expertise of our own employees,” said NWPD Chief Const. Dave Jones in a statement. “This strategic plan represents a promise to the community of New Westminster as we continue to do everything that is possible to keep everyone safe and secure.”

The department noted it conducted a series of consultations in 2015 to arrive at the major goals and objectives for the next four years.
