A reward is being offered for information related a recent daytime shooting in downtown New Westminster.

Crime Stoppers has selected the April 18 shooting on Alexander Street as its Crime of the Week. Crime Stoppers Crime of the Week is a weekly fan-out service based on information provided by police investigators who need public assistance in making communities safer by identifying individuals involved in committing crimes.

Around noon on Tuesday, April 18, New Westminster police responded to a report of a shooting in the 700 block of Carnarvon Street. In an April 20 update, police the NWPD said investigators had determined that one suspect approached a group of people on Alexander Street, pointed a firearm in their direction, and repeatedly fired at the group before fleeing the area.

“If you have any information regarding the incident listed here, please contact Crime Stoppers anonymously,” said a Crime Stoppers news release. You could be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000 upon arrest and charge. You will never be asked your name or have to appear in court.”

Hailey Finnigan, the New Westminster Police Department’s strategic communications coordinator, said the police department is always appreciative when neighbours or other public safety partners share its messages.

“Investigators believe this is a targeted shooting and not a random attack,” she said in an email to the Record.

The victim, who is in his late teens, suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting.

“I have heard from residents that incidents like this cause people to feel like they can’t go downtown and can’t engage in the things they want and should be able to do,” NWPD Chief Const. Dave Jansen said in a news release after the shooting. “This incident is completely unacceptable in our community. In light of this and other recent events in the downtown core, I am working with my leadership team to develop an immediate plan of action.”
