Police have learned more about a shooting in downtown New West on Tuesday – but they still need the public’s help in the investigation that saw multiple shots fired.
After responding to a shooting in the 700 block of Carnarvon Street about noon on Tuesday, April 18, the New Westminster Police Department reported that a man was being treated for non-life threatening injuries and two suspects are in police custody.
The New Westminster Police Department Major Crime Unit is now asking for public assistance.
In an April 20 update, the NWPD said investigators have learned more about the location of the shooting, which they say occurred on Alexander Street. Police have determined that one suspect approached a group of people, pointed a firearm in their direction, and repeatedly fired at the group before fleeing the area.
“I have heard from residents that incidents like this cause people to feel like they can’t go downtown and can’t engage in the things they want and should be able to do,” NWPD Chief Const. Dave Jansen said in a news release. “This incident is completely unacceptable in our community. In light of this and other recent events in the Downtown core, I am working with my leadership team to develop an immediate plan of action.”
According to the NWPD, the shooting occurred at approximately noon in a heavily populated area of the Downtown neighbourhood.
Detectives are asking people who live and work close to Alexander Street to contact them if they find physical evidence they believe is connected to this shooting or if they have CCTV footage of what occurred to reach out to the Major Crime Unit.
The victim has non-life-threatening injuries and is in their late teens,” said Staff-Sgt. Jeff Scott. “Detectives are working to determine how many shots were fired, which is why we’re asking anyone who heard or saw what happened to call our Major Crime Unit at 604-529-2430 or email them at [email protected].”
The Record has reached out to the New Westminster Police Department for more details on this incident. More to come.
