For the 30 or so households on Colborne Street in the Glenbrook neighbourhood, Canada Day is a good time to catch up and have some fun.
This past Friday, the street had its fourth annual Canada Day block party, with parents and children celebrating Canada's 144th birthday.
Andy Goyan has lived on the street for nine years now and is pleased with how the party brings people together.
"It's kind of neat because this street has 17 new houses on one side and 10 to 12 older houses on the other side," said Goyan. "And the road used to go through (to 10th Avenue), but now it's got a cul-de-sac."
Goyan said the idea for the block party came from his neighbours, Su-Hui Lomer and Jane Armstrong, and the party has grown in popularity each year.
"We get a permit to close the street for the party and the kids are all out there with their Super Soakers," said Goyan. "We've got a barbecue and a pot luck and tents and everybody seems to have a good time."
Another tradition for the party comes when Charlie Hunter sends out an email asking all the neighbours to pitch in with pulling weeds and doing maintenance at the end of the cul-de-sac.
"Anybody who can chip in tries to help out," said Goyan, who admitted that because he has to care for two young children, he couldn't help out this year.
"Charlie will give me some flack for this," said Goyan.
And at the end of the party, everybody on the block gets together to pose in front of a giant Canada flag.
Goyan said the party has been popular enough that he thinks they may try to do something for Halloween.
