At least two principals in the New Westminster school district are expected to retire at the end of the school year, the board of education chair told The Record.

New Westminster Secondary School principal Mary Bushman and Herbert Spencer Elementary principal Tracy Fulton are both set to retire in June, Michael Ewen said.

Its going to be a huge loss, Ewen said about Bushmans departure. I dont hesitate to say out of all of the principals theyve had at that school, Mary has been the finest.

The high school is a huge, complicated school, and it will be a challenge for anyone to fill her shoes, he said.

As for Spencers principal Fulton, Ewen noted her incredible skill as an administrator, which he noted would be missed.

Replacements take some time, Ewen said, adding that someone may be moved up or a new person could be brought in to replace the outgoing principals.

Ewen, who is a teacher in the Surrey school district, said it is difficult to find teachers who want to move up as administrators nowadays.
