New Westminster is following Victoria’s lead in supporting libraries.
In a motion forwarded to the City of New Westminster, Victoria city council is writing to the provincial government to strongly advocate for the restoration of library funding to a level that reflects both inflationary cost increases since 2009 and the value of this system to the province.
Victoria’s resolution states that libraries are a social justice equalizer that provide universal access to information and learning materials irrespective of income levels, and they also support the B.C. government’s agenda to eliminate poverty, improve access to education and address social justice.
“This is to address funding shortfalls,” Coun. Mary Trentadue said of Victoria’s resolution.
On behalf of New Westminster city council, Mayor Jonathan Cote wrote a letter to the Union of B.C. Municipalities and the province supporting increased funding for B.C. libraries.
