The Sapperton pump station replacement project is getting closer to the finish line.

The project will take waste to the Annasis Island waste water treatment plant via a new connection along Front Street. A recent report to council stated that completion of the Sapperton pump station replacement project is scheduled for the end of 2020.

But there’s still some work to do before than can happen, including the removal of a temporary bulkhead in the existing pump station. That work will require chain saws, cutting torches and other tools to be used in the wet well – work that needs to be done at night and in dry water, when sewer flows are at their lowest levels.

Construction work is normally only allowed between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays and is prohibited on Sundays and statutory holidays, but council has approved an exemption to the construction noise bylaw so NAC Constructors Ltd. can do work required to allow sewage flows to tie in to the new Sapperton pump station. The work will take place over 10 nights between May 12 and June 30.

“Since that work is occurring in the interior of the water well, it should not be excessively loud outside and is not likely to disturb neighbourhood residents,” said the staff report. “Noise will likely result from equipment located and work occurring exterior to the wet well where there will be an enclosed low-noise diesel generator, two low-noise diesel pumps and a vacuum truck. A crane will be used intermittently. There will be some engine and equipment noise from the vacuum truck and the crane.”

The Sapperton pump station is located next to Sapperton Landing Park.
