Pattullo Bridge plans summer closures

There are three weekends this summer that the Pattullo Bridge will be closed for maintenance and repairs.

The closures will allow crews to repair sections of the concrete deck and re-pave portions of the 76-year-old bridge, according to a TransLink media release.

"TransLink will also take the opportunity to review the condition of the bridge's driving surface and make improvements as necessary," the release states. "This maintenance work will help ensure road safety and the longevity of the bridge - it will not address other structural issues such as narrow lanes, need for barriers to protect pedestrians and cyclists, or seismic concerns."

The closures are scheduled for July 20 to 21, Aug. 10 to 11 and Aug. 24 to 25. The work will be postponed to Sept. 7 to 8 is there is any heavy rainfall on the scheduled weekends.

TransLink said motorists should plan alternate routes to cross the Fraser River those weekends. Also, those taking the N19 Night Bus and the #321 bus should plan for longer travel times. The N19 will be re-routed to the Alex Fraser and Queensborough Bridges, and the 321 on Sunday morning will end at Scott Road.

"The City of New Westminster will take advantage of one of the planned closures to conduct a structural inspection of the Royal Avenue Overpass at McBride Boulevard, and patch some pavement in the closure area," the release states.
