Photos: New West gathers for National Indigenous Peoples Day

Here are some highlights from New West's June 21st celebration.

New Westminster celebrated National Indigenous Peoples Day today in Moody Park.

Spirit of the Children Society, the Qayqayt First Nation and the City of New Westminster hosted the free, all-ages event, which featured cultural entertainment, storytelling, games, physical activities, arts and crafts, and Indigenous vendors — and, of course, bannock.

An opening ceremony this morning saw Qayqayt Chief Rhonda Larrabee, Mayor Patrick Johnstone and MLA Jennifer Whiteside bring greetings to the large crowd — including students from local schools — gathered under grey skies.

The Wild Moccasin Dancers led a pow wow, with audience participation, to open the day.

Reporter Julie MacLellan stopped by this morning to check out the festivities. Scroll through the gallery above to check out some highlights.
